Why microservices architecture is key to deploying AI in the insurance sector

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has moved from being a future promise to becoming the main investment driver in the insurance sector. Industry data confirms this: according to Gallagher Re’s Global InsurTech Report Q1 2026, 95.2% of the $1.63 billion invested in the industry during the first quarter of this year went to AI-focused companies.

However, the sector now faces a harsh reality: moving from the proof-of-concept (POC) phase to a massive, scalable, and profitable deployment is currently the market’s greatest challenge.

Where is the real bottleneck? As an industry, we have realized that the actual obstacle no longer lies in developing or acquiring AI itself, but rather in the rigid operational structures of companies. Many insurers focus on building their technological future through in-house developments built on extremely complex legacy systems.

The true bottleneck for AI adoption is no longer the technology itself, but the operational architecture that supports it.

Coexistence with Legacy: Gradual and Risk-Free Modernization

To resolve this historical issue, the solution does not involve taking on risky and expensive full monolithic replacement projects. Replacing the entire core overnight is unfeasible for most organizations.

Our thesis at Weecover advocates for a different strategy: complementing inherited systems by partnering them with modular, cloud-based core solutions driven by APIs and microservices. This allows insurers to add new capabilities gradually and progressively while continuing to run their existing systems.

AI, automation, and advanced analytics rely on a single thing: the ability to access, process, and share data efficiently across the entire tech stack. Without a flexible architecture, innovation is simply impossible.

The Practical Advantage of Modularity

A traditional core that works and provides stability to the business does not need to be shut down. Thanks to modularity, we can connect a specific cloud module to launch a new product or pilot to the market in a matter of weeks to assess its viability—all while coexisting natively with the usual core system.

The commercial consequences of failing to make this shift in time are critical. If AI takes two days to analyze a customer’s risk because the legacy system blocks or fragments the data, competitors operating in real time will win the sale. Sluggishness in the AI era exposes companies to a highly dangerous adverse selection of risks.

Real-Time Data: From Disconnected Silos to a Translator Middleware

Another critical pain point in the sector is the fragmentation of information into disconnected silos (such as isolated databases and manual interfaces). This disconnect prevents the creation of the robust, healthy, and real-time data layer that modern AI requires.

To bridge this tech gap immediately, Weecover proposes implementing a modular middleware or intermediate layer. This technological component acts as a high-connectivity “translator”: it allows AI to interact with legacy systems agilely, cleanly, and quickly—without the need to alter the base code.

Towards a More Agile (and More Human) Insurance Sector

Architectural agility has ceased to be a mere back-office technical support requirement to become a top-level strategic business priority.

The next chapter in insurance transformation will not be defined by algorithms alone, but by the operational and architectural capabilities that enable those algorithms to deliver measurable business results. Over time, AI will become accessible to everyone; however, operational excellence will be much harder to replicate. Insurers investing today in modern, modular distribution platforms will be the ones defining the future of the sector.

Furthermore, the ultimate goal of this evolution is not to dehumanize the industry, but quite the opposite. By freeing professionals from tedious administrative tasks through automation, we allow distribution and brokerage to focus on what technology cannot replicate: empathy, personalized advice, and customer trust.
